Gunboat diplomacy is so 19th century. Gibraltar may be a British dependency, but they're still very dependent on Spain. Gibraltar can't even provide housing for its workforce, many of whom commute from Spain. If Spain were to clamp down on such arrangements -- and with Brexit looming they're just biding their time -- Gibraltar's GDP will suffer a body blow. Funny you should use the "jewel in the crown" idiom. We all know what happened to the best known one. Gibraltar won't escape decolonisation either.

Only if Blighty starts subsidizing Gibraltar even more than now.

Gibraltar would be hard-pressed to survive without the military bases and the lax regulation that paved the way for the online gaming industry. I see a parallel with the Yanks giving native Americans the right to open casinos on their reservations. Even the most casual of observers immediately notices that Gibraltar isn't British and the Gibraltarians aren't Brits.

Fek The First, you're the one who's boyishly naive if you think the British Empire was about spreading democracy and the rule of law. In a few cases these happened to be pleasant byproducts, but just as often British colonies were brutally exploited and saddled with problems that affect them to this very day. Curiously, you also seem to think those colonised hadn't languages of their own. Gibraltar does employ Spaniards, and yes, they'll be affected, but I'm sure Spanish national pride outweighs such concerns. It must be your naivety acting up again, but by Gibraltar failing to provide its workforce housing I obviously meant that Gibraltar hasn't got the space to house all of its workers. For them to rent or buy, savvy?

Fek The First, I see you're foolishly assuming I'm Spanish. To borrow one of your idioms, reading comprehension isn't your cup of tea, is it? It speaks volumes that a "supercarrier" (the Yanks must be so amused) gives you a hard-on, especially one which lacks strike aircraft and the ones it will eventually get are overpriced duds. If you were really keen on facts, you'd know the Gibraltarians aren't thrilled about Brexit.

@hobbabobba7912 Why wouldn't you consider them part of Gibraltar's workforce? Besides, there are a lot of workers from the British Isles, too, who're unable to find housing in Gibraltar, so they live across the border and commute on a daily basis.
