You've misread the memo. NATO is a defence alliance. Not an automaton that provides troops whenever a US president feels like going on a military adventure again.

You fail to appreciate that Russia desperately needs to flog its oil and gas to Europe. If Europe shopped elsewhere, Russia would face insolvency in no time. With a poorly diversified economy, Russia needs European goods and services in return. It's called economic co-dependency, and it's a good way of preventing war.

@eriknielsen1849 You're exaggerating. The sanctions are hardly all-encompassing. Yearly exports from the EU to Russia still amount to €85 billion. All EU members unanimously agreed to the sanctions. Why blame the US and the UK?

@meganh9460 What a ridiculous, uninformed American viewpoint. If anything, Germany's European allies want Germany to bolster its defences. No one in their right mind believes the Germans are against us. Germany is an economic powerhouse, but in a Western European context its economy is by no means unique in anything but size. With today's complex supply chains, we as much complement one another as we compete with them. True, Germany should pull its weight militarily, but you have no clue to what end. Go home, Yankee!

Not every country is land-locked and mountainous. Or plain lucky.

It has been claimed that your sky friend is imaginary.

@eriknielsen1849 OK, we're doing conspiracy theories. Count me out.

@eriknielsen1849 Just for the record, I haven't watched CNN for years. I can't stand the American repetitive, preachy style. My problem with you conspiracy theorists is that you suffer from a severe case of confirmation bias. There's no reasoning with you lot, because you've abandoned reason.

@Kenzofeis NATO members are only obligated to provide military assistance when another member is subjected to an armed attack -- the famous Article 5. Extracurricular activity is voluntary. We could debate until the cows come home if that's official NATO business.

Good enough for a conspiracy theorist, anyway.

Me thinks you're trying to compensate for the ignominy of retreating from yet another unpopular war. Leave off the military adventurism and there'll be no "global agenda."
