I completely agree. To stave off accusations of hypocrisy, I presume you're lobbying the CCP to come clean about the Tiananmen Square Massacre?

@jiachunwu4753 Thanks for confirming that the CCP muzzles you. I hope you won't lose your VPN privileges for being so forthright. The OP referred to massacres. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't dismiss a massacre as a "political incident".

@jiachunwu4753 We non-Chinese value the right to challenge the government very highly. It's part and parcel of democracy. There's no power monopoly to maintain at all cost, so there's no need to unleash massacres on our people either. Your problem is that you can't judge if the your government is beneficial or not, because it's a subjective matter and the subjects -- the people --- aren't properly consulted on what they deem beneficial. There's an interesting correlation between democracy and happiness. The leading democracies of the world also perform well in happiness. That's in stark contrast to China, which scores poorly both in democracy and happiness.

@jiachunwu4753 Check out the Democracy Index and the World Happiness Report. The correlation is clear. I believe happiness and wealth go hand in hand, but only if the latter is more or less evenly distributed. It's no coincidence that the Nordic countries are both democratic and happy, with all four appearing in the top ten of both lists. Sooner or later, China's economic growth will be stymied by lack of democracy. We've seen it all before -- the South Korean leaders had to choose between social unrest (autocracy) and continued growth (democracy). It's no secret that the CCP has a social contract with the people -- a de facto mandate to govern as long as the going is good -- but that won't last forever. I'm just worried that Xi won't let go even if he starts harming the Chinese economy. It could be argued that that point has been reached already.
