@krollpeter But in a way, Xi is digging his own grave. Directly or indirectly, he's ruining world-class Chinese companies, who'd do much better without interference from the CCP. There would be no Huaweis and Tiktoks getting the boot in the West. I bet the newly-affluent Chinese, who've tasted international success and yearn for more, are growing uneasy with Xi driving away their customers, one by one. China's social contract is unraveling.

@darkpenguin1978 I spent two years building roads and later, dispensaries in Kenya. None of it entailed taking anything away from the Kenyans, since we covered all expenses. Development aid, in other words. We employed quite a few locals, as workers and through subcontractors. The Chinese, on the other hand, charge for the roads and the infrastructure they build and more often than not, they bring in their own workers rather than employ locals. Workmanship is reportedly so shoddy that the roads soon wash away. You can't say the Africans in questions are left with nothing, since they're still left with the loans to repay.

So Africa wants to be looted by someone else for a change? It reminds me of what was said of 19th-century US missionaries, who turned businessmen: "They went to do good, and they did very well." China certainly has taken that lesson to heart.

@darkpenguin1978 You're flattering yourself. The nefarious effects of China's neo-colonialism in Africa are surfacing as we speak. It may be a new form of colonialism, but it's exploitation all the same.
