Germany had a best-in-class autocannon-based CIWS in the Dutch Goalkeeper that could take out drones with relatively inexpensive 30 mm ammunition. Then it went for a US missile-based system. I guess no-one was really ready for the drone revolution.

@SeeLasSee Germany has a strong defence industry that's firing on all cylinders, and has for quite some time. Sadly, the same can't be said about their defence force.

@XMysticHerox I already alluded to RAM having replaced the Goalkeeper. And it's not so much about how you put projectiles in the air, but where and when. The Otomelaras and Mausers don't have the sensors and targeting systems that dedicated CIWS have, at least not in the German Navy. In Ukraine, the Gepard SPAAG has proven the most cost-effective drone killer. The Goalkeeper is its closest naval counterpart. We were discussing how to counter drones, where CIWS are perfectly adequate. Countering missiles is obviously more challenging because of speed alone.

@XMysticHerox The USS Carney has the Phalanx CIWS, which eats drones and assault craft for breakfast. The problem with it is that its multi-barrelled 20 mm autocannon has limited range. That means cargo ships will need to sail convoy-style, protected by a sufficient number of CIWS-equipped warships.

@Pirate67 It's what bots do.

@XMysticHerox Didn't I mention convoys? Cargo ships huddling together, while escorting warships protect them? Mantis is a land equivalent of Phalanx. The latter does have inferior range, but there are further-reaching CIWS in the 30 mm Goalkeeper, the 40 mm Dardo and the CIWS-capable 76 mm Otomelara.

@kurtwicklund8901 What exactly prevents a CIWS from protecting other ships? Range is not an issue if there are enough CIWS-equipped warships about.
