@defendfreedom1390 With their "tiny economies", Eastern Europe would've had an easier time becoming Russia-free in their energy needs. They clearly didn't practise what they preached. At the time, it made sense for Germany to trade extensively with Russia. Capitalist peace theory is not without merits. Merkelm miscalculated in that she assumed sanity would prevail in Russia. But not with a dictatorial ex-KGB officer at the helm, it seems.

Khrushchev knew that the Cuban Missile Crisis spelled his political demise. At least he had the presence of mind to bow out gracefully. No such luck with Putler.

@defendfreedom1390 Your indignation would more appropriate if Eastern Europe wasn't relying heavily on Russian gas as well. Hungary and Poland are among the top users. Hungary's Orban even struck a special deal with Putin in exchange for political favours.
