  2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but was no sovereign nation called Russia taking part in WW2. The Russians are eager to take full credit, but their role clearly diminished when the USSR imploded.

  4. I'm afraid Putin needs the attention. If he's ignored, he'll stir up trouble to get noticed again. For an authoritarian leader with domestic issues, strained international relations are a must. Then there's Russia's superpower status (read: aspiration) -- that must be maintained as well.
