@mythbusterUSA The Chinese were only able to crack the cell phone market when it got commoditized and pretty much everyone could make one from readily available components. And they're still competing on price. Still, Apple shows that cell phone brands matter. I don't see any similar dynamic in sports brands. Image matters much more in sports and it doesn't come cheap. How would the Chinese have a price advantage there?

@kolviczd6885 You're right as far America is concerned -- the Yanks publicly admit their weakness in 5G networks -- but that is not to say Huawei has the global market to itself. The Scandinavians, Nokia and Ericsson, regularly beat Huawei in network bids all over the world, and I can assure, they're never the lowest bidders -- Huawei are. Huawei can afford to underbid with the lavish subsidies they receive from the Chinese state. Does it come as surprise that the latter demands something in return?

@mythbusterUSA I've seen these Chinese brands at Chinese airports. I wonder how they're going to differentiate themselves in a fiercely competitive market with an abundance of firmly established brands. China has a global PR problem, too. Critical consumers are already giving Chinese-made products a miss, forcing Western brand owners to cut their ties with China. Chinese brands are stuck with it.

@tomtube1012 It's appears not. Especially Asians are very brand-conscious. Brand-building is expensive. How would the Chinese do it cheaper? Western brands already outsource their manufacturing to low-cost countries, so there's no price advantage there.
