Be that as it may, authorities must, at least in civilised countries, take into account whether or not basic human rights are observed in the requesting country before agreeing to extradition. China comes up short in this respect, so the assumption is that we don't extradite anyone to China. Approving the bill wouldn't have meant that Hong Kong, too, flout basic human rights.

@lovesimpleton8177 Trump hardly epitomizes Western-style democracy. Trump is both a symptom and a cause of America being on a slippery slope towards authoritarianism, away from democracy. By the way, you don't need to specify "Western-style" when referring to democracy in China. There's no "Eastern-style" democracy in China either, or for that matter, democracy in any shape of form.
