Sure it is. Alibaba itself will end up on the sanctions list if it is found to be in violation. That would ruin their international business. Russia is peanuts in comparison, so the choice is easily made.

@AAAAAA-tj1nq Alibaba's sales to the West -- and pretty much elsewhere, too -- will grind to a halt if they're cut off from international banking services. I just read about a Western businessman who helped a Russian oligarch evade sanctions. He's now on the sanctions list himself. Being forced into retirement, he now struggles to collect his pension and pay his bills. Banks refuse to serve hiim.

If companies in said countries are found to be in violaton of the sanctions, they will be the target of sanctions themselves. That's probably ruinous for them, so exporting sanctioned goods to Russia is tantamount to closing shop or filing for bankruptcy.

It's not about_hermetically_ isolating Russia. If it becomes impossible for Russia to source critical components in significant numbers, it's mission accomplished. If one component slips through, our ever-present Krembots may be overjoyed, but the manufacturers won't be.

@csuporj Freedom? Restrictions to trade have existed since... forever. It's freedom to pick your customers. Personally, I also exercise my freedom by not giving any business to Subway and Burger King, since they still haven't exited Russia. In the past, Russia, too, enthusiastically sanctioned North Korea and Iran. Ironically, both are now Russia's friends in need/friends indeed. Beggars can't be choosers, I suppose.

@vagabond919 Meaning final assembly was done in China, while the most valuable components were imported. Even Chinese-made lesser components may contain Western intellectual property that is subject to sanctions. China is pretty good about respecting foreign IP, because it wants its own IP respected as well. You should read the case studies about how little value China adds to the iPhone, while still getting full merit for "making" the phone. Trade balance figures belie the fact that China accounts for relatively little of the total value.

Since you're apparently unable to do simple online searches, I'll quote the ICC arrest warrant for you: "Mr Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, born on 7 October 1952, President of the Russian Federation, is allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation (under articles 8(2)(a)(vii) and 8(2)(b)(viii) of the Rome Statute). The crimes were allegedly committed in Ukrainian occupied territory at least from 24 February 2022. There are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Putin bears individual criminal responsibility for the aforementioned crimes, (i) for having committed the acts directly, jointly with others and/or through others (article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute), and (ii) for his failure to exercise control properly over civilian and military subordinates who committed the acts, or allowed for their commission, and who were under his effective authority and control, pursuant to superior responsibility (article 28(b) of the Rome Statute)."

You're like a caveman from prehistoric times who rejoices at the thought of standing on top of an oil deposit, one kilometre under your feet. It won't warm your cave, but it gives you a warm feeling. For your info, Russia is NOT self-sufficient. By now, Russia is utterly dependent on Chinese goods. To get the yuans to buy them, Russia is forced to sell its oil at a loss to China. It's not for nothing that Garry Gasparov quips about a Chinese province called Ruxia with a certain Pu Tin as its regional governor.
