It's too bitter a pill to swallow for those oil-producing countries that have little else going for them, but swallow they will, one way or the other.

Yeah, it's like suggesting that the tobacco industry will ban smoking.

@csuporj Not so. As demand withers, the oil price will drop to unprofitable levels for all but a few producers. Russia, with its highest production cost, will be among the first to close shop.

Better start building those interplanetary rockets then. This is as good as it gets.

@IloveCamels335 The Nordic countries have all passed the half-way point in leveraging renewable energy. Then there's non-fossil nuclear energy. I think you're in denial.

@IloveCamels335 I'm using the Nordic countries as an example of what is possible. I made no reference to Germany in this respect. Germany's energy policy has proven an abject failure, as has its Wandel durch Handel policy towards Russia as a whole. Their asinine stance towards nuclear energy tops it all off. Solar isn't helping the Nordic countries much as sunlight is not plentiful at higher latitudes. Wind energy is very viable, and so is hydropower. The point here is that overreliance on one form of renewable energy is madness, the only possible exception being Iceland, which has geothermal energy in abundance.

@vandamonium1731 New battery technologies are being developed all the time. Besides, it's not just about batteries. Renewable energy will be used to produce hydrogen, which lends itself to energy storage as well. Don't be a neo-Lyddite.

@csuporj Wikipedia is your friend.

@csuporj Have you heard of taxation? I'm paying close to 50% taxes on every litre of fuel. Or used to, because I haven't tanked my hybrid for ages. Taxation is widely used to curb harmful behaviour. Alcohol and cigarettes? Take the train.
1
@csuporj The whole point is that if you tax harmful forms of energy, you have to provide cheaper renewable alternatives. Your centuries-old examples of French and British colonial mismanagement don't hold up.
1
@csuporj You're repeating what I wrote earlier. Private car ownership needn't be as high as it is now. I have colleagues who use car-sharing or got a car-scrapping premium that bought them an electric bike. Of course, you need more public transportation to compensate. Which part of taking the train to the Alps didn't you get?
1
@csuporj Why are you still going on about petrol and taxation? If you don't like high taxes, don't drive a petrol car. Get an EV, or like me, a hybrid.
