@bikikalita13 No doubt about it. Russia is at its weakest in post-Soviet times -- its regular army has been decimated and its best kit destroyed in Ukraine. Finnish weapons and tactics helped bring it about, too. NATO, already the strongest military alliance in human history, is growing stronger still. Your emoticons are cute. Childish, but cute.

@bikikalita13 Russia would have to be suicidal to invade Finland. The heavily-forested central and southern regions are premier ambush country and the arctic north is practically intraversible -- either too snowy or too soggy. NATO airpower will deal with the invaders faster, but their fate would be sealed no matter what. Finnish generals were salivating at the thought of unleashing with artillery on the insanely-long military columns in Ukraine -- artillery that Ukraine lacked but Finland has. Now we have to let NATO bombers join in the fun, but sharing is caring.

Why? Russia has never been this weak in post-Soviet times. Economically, Russia has set itself back by fifteen years; militarily, easily twice that. Meanwhile, Finland is joining the most powerful military alliance known to man.

@ashishvishwas9952 Finland and Sweden have received security guarantees from the UK, US and Germany in this grey period, while ratification is still ongoing. And Russia's military is already overstretched in Ukraine. Russia's economy is that bad. Even before the Ukraine invasion, it was a common refrain of Putin's that he'd diversify the Russian economy, cutting its risky over-reliance on oil and gas exports. Yet nothing significant ever changed for the better. Even by the standards he set for himself 20 years ago, Putin has failed to deliver on modernising the Russian economy. Russian has suffered 80,000 casualties and lost 4,000 armoured vehicles in Ukraine. That's by and large regular army and its newest kit, which means Russia's military backbone is dangerously nearing breaking point. It can still crawl back, but it will be just that, a long crawl.

@ashishvishwas9952 Should we have felt sorry for Hitler when the Soviet Union decisively received material aid form the US and Great Britain? You can ask yourself why Russia is so isolated. Could it be because it's on the wrong side of history?

@ashishvishwas9952 India isn't under the control of the US, yet on no account would I call India isolated. Putin embarked on a military adventure that is now backfiring badly on him. If it was Putin's aim to raise Russia's standing in the world, the reverse is happening.

It's a regular occurrence and Sanna Marin is no fighter pilot on quick reaction alert. I've witnessed FiAF F/A-18s break the sound barrier when they speeded to intercept Russian airplanes so many times that I've lost count. They do so above a large lake so as not to startle people unnecessarily. There's a relatively narrow air corridor in the Finnish Gulf and the Russians sometimes stray into controlled airspace. Sometimes, it's weather-related. Even hotshot fighter jocks give summer thunderstorms wide berth.

Rakesh, we have a president who's the commander-in-chief of the Finnish Defence Forces. Like Modi, he's a septuagenarian and he probably has to stay at home anyway to look after his 4-year old son.

There's nothing sinister about Sanna Marin's rise to power. A coalition partner lost confidence in her predecessor, who mismanaged a postal strike, so he had to make way for new talent, and parliamentary confidence was restored. Are you new to parliamentary democracies? Ironically, Boris Johnson made PM in the same way, only to find himself purged next. Australia switches PMs at the drop of a hat.
