  3. I once read about a WW2 pilot who was ordered up to shoot down an escaped barrage balloon. He did his very best, but couldn't close in. They later figured out it was the planet Venus.

  5. It's a pity the same countermeasures couldn't be used this time. Then, the press blackout led the Japanese to believe that their incendiary balloons failed to reach their target. It was almost as brilliant as the Brits using the press to convince the Germans that their V-1s tended to overshoot London. The Germans corrected their aim with the result that the V-1s fell short.
