  1.  @Buppasiri1  Sure, Germans laughed at Trump like the rest of us, but not in this respect. Germany is painfully aware of neglecting itse defence. It's not a laughing matter among the Germans. Let's face it, despite its defence spending, the UK is woefully ill-equipped to wage a Ukraine-style war. In that respect, it's no better than Germany.

  3. That would make little difference. NATO gets by with very little funding, because it's got a relatively small budget. The main contributions to NATO come in the form of national armies, navies and air forces funded directly by the members themselves. So, feel free to cut all funding for your armed forces. And capitulate to Putin while at it. And Xi. And Iran's mad ayatollahs.

  15.  @halberderdier8073  The US has a plethora of extracurricular activities in matters military. With few exceptions, European defence spending goes purely towards fullfilling NATO commitments. The US have committed themselves in many more areas. The Iraq War was a case in point. That was purely an extracurricular activity as far as NATO was concerned.

  16.  @cdeford2  Putin has no veto in matters pertaining to NATO membership. Putin can invent himself a sphere of influence, but there's no legal basis for it. Russia broke the UN Charter, period.

  17.  @DavidJohnson-dc8lu  Uh, countries bring themselves into NATO and US military bases -- or rather NATO bases -- and weapons only get to be placed there if the countries in question explicitly agree. In fact, some do not and are none the worse for wear.
