  1. I served in two defence forces, the FDF and Netherlands Armed Forces. It was no different, only fewer woods in Holland. And as a MAG gunner, one got hoarse quickly.

  2. In the FDF, the 'mopeds' -- long-timers -- were keen to fire blanks, the 'uncles' -- short-timers -- not so anymore. It wasn't just about having to clean one's rifle afterward, but also, the blanks came in handy when lighting fires -- a must in those subarctic cold climes. Knackebrod sprinkled with gunpowder always did the trick.
