  1. In your book, it's an open provocation if a sovereign country exercises its right to strike alliances as it sees fit? Till not too long ago, Russia kept saying it's entirely up to Finland if it joins NATO or not. You're an anachronism.

  5. Nah, the Greenlanders would vote Scandinavian welfare state time and time again. Greenland is not economically self-sufficient. Both US statehood and independence would mean a drop in living standards.

  9. Let's see, we have 52.7 out of every 1,000 of our citizens (including yours truly) serving actively or in the reserves. The equivalent figure for the USA is a modest 6.3. As to footing defence bills, as I see it, the USA spends 1.75% of its GDP on NATO, whereas our NATO spending is 2.4% -- and would be higher still if we paid our national servicemen (and -women) proper wages.

  13. If the US were to keep Greenland's current Scandi-style welfare system in place, I could envision a great many Americans moving there, just because of it. A green light indeed.

Are you actually suggesting that the USA will follow in Russia's footsteps and break the UN Charter by annexing foreign lands? Civilisation is a very thin veneer!

  15.  @IanAnthony-IAm  Any Canadian also knows that Canada's healthcare system is adversely affected by the US healthcare system -- if you can call it that -- which drains Canada of healthcare talent and drives up cost. In Europe, we have both universal and private healthcare and our healthcare providers typically serve both markets. Competition drives cost down and quality up. And we have no US next door to ruin it for us.
