Marines? Was there a great need for amphibious landings in continental Europe?

Your Herr Chamberlain was rather like the Italians, wasn't he? Prone to capitulate.

@graemesydney38 You are desperately trying to forget Chamberlain's notorious policy of appeasement. It paved the way for WW2.

Jigger2361 Canadian soldiers were -- and still are -- highly revered for the determination with which they liberated the Netherlands. While in school in seventies, we handed out flowers to the returning veterans and their wives. Some were overcome by emotion, which, as I recall, was infectious.

Hitler was suitably impressed with the French, having faced them personally in WW1. When the Free French showed their mettle in Bir Hakeim, Hitler reportedly felt vindicated. I think his soldiers were equally impressed when the Free French started rolling up the German forces in France.

The Battle of the Bulge took place in Belgium and Luxembourg, not France. The Americans suffered defeats against the Germans at Kasserine Pass and Hürtgen Forest. If you insist on focusing on battles fought on French soil, there was the Battle of Metz, which is considered a German strategic victory.

The respect came back after France managed to regroup, as the Free French, and show their mettle in the Battle of Bir Hakeim. Afterwards, Hitler, a WW1 vet who fought in France himself, reportedly burst out in adulation, calling the French the best soldiers -- after the Germans, of course.

@billballbuster7186 The Battle of Hürtgen Forest was far more costly, with 33,000 US casualties vs. 2,851 in the Battle of Metz. I think you're getting your battles and campaigns mixed up.

@mickethegoblin7167 Hitler to the members of the German general staff in June 11, 1942: “You heard what Koch just said. Bir Hakeim is new evidence of the thesis I always defended: the French are, after us, the best soldiers in Europe. Even with its current birth rate, France will always be able to field a hundred divisions. After the war, we will absolutely have to build a coalition which may contain a country capable of military exploits such as Bir Hakeim which stun the world”.

@raka522 I suppose the German general in question didn't face the Free French in combat. Maybe he was even an armchair general, like yourself.
1
@raka522 So, are you a general in active service?
1
@raka522 No, I'm gainfully employed. Don't project. Your emojis are cute. Don't let anyone tell you that they're childish.

@Br1ght0n Your beef is with Hitler and his crowd, or rather, their ghosts.

@graemesydney38 Appeasement is a desperate measure on the best of days. Great Britain and France had the means to nip Germany's rearmament and expansionism in the bud, but chose not to. Chamberlain went even further than that, emboldening Hitler with his appeasement policy. In that sense, he most definitely paved the way for WW2. I trust you've heard Edmund Burke's quote: "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing". We're at a similar crossroads with Putin's Russia. Would you like to give appeasement another go?
