  3. Dad was in the 82nd Airborne and took the ski training at Camp Hale in Colorado. He raised me on stories of the Finnish ski troops against the Soviets. Conventional thinking about terrain and obstacles goes right out the window in winter. Properly equipped ski troops turn rivers and difficult terrain into highways. Move people and arms across distances normally associated with cavalry and mechanized, and at the exact time that cavalry and mechanized are immobilized by the conditions. The Mongols used winter against targets that relied too much on water defenses.

  4.  @lettuceman9439  : You can rule for a long time by fear and oppression, but when there's no real love or respect, it doesn't take many setbacks for the people to overthrow you. In the end, I think sheer incompetence is what brings down autocratic rule.
