People say Russia wasn't prepared for the war, but what I saw was their attack in February, 2022 made tremendous territorial gains with relatively few forces. I don't think they could've obtained those gains if they had mobilized in a more conventional way. I think that surprise and the feint at Kiev were keys to achieving their goals in the south.

@dannydanny2789 The "column attacks" we're seeing, now, are more probing attacks than big, intimidating, combined-arms attacks. But maybe Tony and you are talking about two entirely different things. I think we understand the mathematics of restoring order after smashing enemy forces. It takes a lot more men than anybody really has. It's one thing, in Donbass, where the majority probably welcome Russian advances. It's an entirely different thing to "conquer Ukraine." Oh, they could probably wipe out Ukraine if they wanted, but they couldn't very easily establish and maintain order, with the native population absolutely against them. We saw this in Iraq, where the Allied (basically U.S.) forces could easily destroy the enemy, but could never restore order and maintain it. Same in Afghanistan. I think Russia will be content with Donbass and areas already ethnic Russian. Of course, Ukraine could've declared itself neutral a long time ago, and stopped bombing its own people, like it promised to do and then did not.

You have to understand that Americans have no natural defense against government propaganda. They spent their whole lives believing our government wouldn't and can't control the media. That makes it much more effective than in an outwardly totalitarian state. As an "immune," let me say I never had a gripe with the Russian people, clear back to the Cold War days. I was never a fan of the USSR, but in the '70s and '80s, I had no conception of how corrupt my own (American) government was, and how it poisons our minds - mostly with fear - to manufacture consent for very bad policies, here at home and abroad. Anyway, any Americans who treated you badly also treat fellow Americans badly.
