  1. In our 2-party system, there are supposed to be more parties competing. The minute they get competitive with the best platform, one or both of the 2 main parties will hijack the platform (and then corrupt it), sweeping up the 3rd-party candidate's voters. It only seems permanent, because the names remain the same, but just think of the platforms of both parties 5, 10, or 50 years ago.
