  2.  @nicklivewire  All of Europe subsidizes various industries. It's a false efficiency, but the harm (higher taxes) is more diffuse, but they can make great propaganda (We're world leaders in passenger aircraft!) and undercut competitors. The USA loves its crop supports, even though the agriculture system that results is not based on actual supply and demand, and the big agriculture companies and petro-chemical fertilizer producers care more about their bottom line this year, than the way they're degrading the soil and food quality.
