  1. "Well-intentioned helpers" did more harm than good. They were self-sufficient in many foodstuffs. We dumped a bunch of corn products on them and killed off their homegrown, self-sustaining rice production, if I recall correctly. The "shoes for every Haitian" program put the shoemakers out of business... All kinds of ill-conceived assistance, typical of do-gooders and NGOs. There was a fair amount spent, but it was all spent by people whose money it wasn't on 3rd parties. No real understanding.
