You're right but you leave out the fact that they had no reason to ask him what they asked him, and especially not the way they approached him with their questions. They had no business quizzing him on his conversations with foreign officials, and he was under no obligation to provide details of his phone conversations with FBI agents who were just having a casual, get-acquainted conversation. At best, they had an info-gathering excuse, but they interrogated - er ah interviewed - him about phone conversations to which they already had the transcripts.
