  1. Technically it's fascism. Socialists have the government outright own the means of production. In the USA, we let you own your own shit, but then the government tells you what to do and when to do it, with regard to your business. It's understandable that you (and others) make this mistake, because there's no functional difference between fascism and socialism. If you can't control your own shit, it's the same as not owning it in the first place. And even under socialism, the governments never owned or controlled EVERYthing. One way to measure is by tracking the extent of black markets. Under Soviet rule, you STILL needed your plumbing fixed or some green vegetables (or MEAT) on the table. You might have a few

  2. sigh . You might have rubles, but they still can't buy the plumber's time. But there IS a local plumber, and you probably trade something from your garden for his time. Things still get done, but the more highly controlled the system is, the more law-breaking and under-the-table deals are made, in order for people to get what they need. Government is TIGHTLY tied to all black-market activity, and DRIVES it. We see it most clearly in the illegal drugs. But it's true in all things. The government ends up strangling everything, until the people adapt and work around it.
