In spite of all the time wasted, people are learning a ton of stuff "by accident," just by indulging their curiosity.

For centuries, Afghan Muslims have raided to the East, in their jihadic tradition. They need to be slapped down, every now and again, but invasion is for fools. Afghans' greatest triumph was during the Crimean War, if I'm not mistaken. A war in which Britain and Russia, in particular, basically got their asses handed to them.

Rejecting archaic/obsolete norms and traditions is a good thing, generally. But it's a dead end if you're not CLEAR about what to replace them with. This is the one problem with seeking change that few people understand. The current system, whatever it is and whatever's wrong with it, exists because it basically worked well enough to replicate itself down through the generations. Treating the symptoms of malaise within the established order is rarely a full solution. In fact, history shows that if you don't understand the entire system, wholistically, you generally do more harm than good, due to unintended consequences, like a farmer who figures that if a ton of pesticide helps his crops, then 10 tons of pesticide must be 10 times better...

But he's a kid who's earned the right to have a beer when he's back home, and is entitled to all the privileges of full adulthood. From my increasingly ancient perspective, you're still pretty childlike in your understanding of the world, with few exceptions. You may have lots of adult experience, but really haven't had the time to develop a real sense of history and how the world - and human nature - really works. But eventually, you become a free-market, libertarian capitalist, and I'll consider you a 100% adult. If you're over 30 and you're still libtarded, I figure it's just a case of arrested development.

@Hengebobs : You'd be surprised at how many join in order to afford tuition at schools that would ordinarily be beyond their means to afford. If I weren't 4F, that's the route I would've taken, myself. As it was, I just worked my crippled ass through my undergraduate work, out of my own pocket. When I went on to graduate school, I was able to stop working as janitor/grease-monkey with grease on his hands and start a career as a math teacher with chalk dust on his hands, beginning with slave-wage Teaching Assistantship that taught me how to live CHEAP and still be happy. One of the best things that happened to me was those years living in poverty and working through school. It created cheap-skate habits (Rice and beans and no restaurants) that have served me well, even after I got that "real job."
