  1. The Chinese cling to their totalitarian ways because to not do so is their quick end. This puts them between a rock and a hard place. They can't compete with free people, economically, without opening things up in their country, but they can't stay in power if they truly open things up.

I think the CCP had everything figured out, except for what other countries might do in response to their cheating ways. Understandable. With punks like Bush I, II, Clinton, or Obama in office, and the usual suspects in Congress, they could have kept behaving in exactly the same way for the foreseeable future. They just didn't count on their bullshit resulting in a nationalist populist movement in USA and Europe. The Chinese - and the elites in the West - always treat regular folk like pawns, until there's a pawn uprising.
