  1. That heavy crude Venezuela's sitting on needs oil prices around $90/barrel to be profitable. It's a very thin margin. The trouble is that all kinds of production kicks in at or below that price level. With or without huge oil reserves, Venezuela would be a nice place, if they didn't have idiots trying to centrally plan things. I agree. What makes it worse is they're very poor planners, even by central-government standards.

  2. A few weeks ago I saw a journalist touring a big store in Venezuela to prove that things weren't bad. The shelves were stocked with goods. Everything looked beautiful. But I noticed that there were no SHOPPERS. Turns out those shelves were full because hyperinflation priced them beyond the means of ordinary people to buy anything! LOL! People want to blame Trump for their problems, but the collapse was already in its early stages long before Trump came along. He might be piling-on, here, at the end, to get the thing over with, but they were in a death spiral, already. Just another banana republic dooming itself to failure with authoritarian rule that never ends well.
