  1. Its main benefit might be as an organizing/unifying force. A large group of people with a shared belief can out-compete much larger groups that lack a shared belief. It's illogical, but logical. Believing is irrational. Not believing is also irrational.

  2. Those belief systems arise due to flaws in existing belief systems. The schism usually creates a false dichotomy with its own flawed belief system. Nature of the beast.
