  1. The people are realists, but their leaders are authoritarian fantasists. They will double-down on stupid until they're out of power, and they will use any trick to stay in power, despite the groundswell of opposition. Propaganda, censorship, economic oppression, declaring opposition parties outlaw, ... Nothing is off the table. Very scary times. The manufacture of consent is rapidly becoming compulsory consent.
