  1. They couldn't've gotten it more wrong if maximizing harm were their entire purpose. That's why I'm leaning into "It was deliberate." Certainly the "They're just incompetent" theory is pretty persuasive, too, but the censorship and thinly-veiled authoritarianism were SO fast and SO complete, it just can't be an accident. That said, there was plenty of sheer opportunism that you would expect to take place, whether it was deliberate or not. What scares me the most is that these hoaxes serve their purpose and do their harm and it's not until years later that anyone even challenges the authorities, by which time, the bad actions are so widespread, and the facts are so buried, no one is held accountable and no real changes to the system are made.
