Meh. Chicken or egg. They were in the vicinity early during the outbreak. Whether they brought it with or caught it there is an open question, but Occam's razor cuts the conspiracy theory of yours up pretty badly, given that the institute of virology was doing exactly the kind of research needed to create the first strain.

I care that they're totalitarian. I wish they weren't. But we can't use force or coercion to change that. More importantly, we shouldn't, because as you say, it is a sovereign nation.

They shouldn't've been doing the research, but if they were doing it, they needed much better safety equipment and protocols. American corruption and Chinese cheapness. Funded (on the cheap) by Americans, the most likely scenario is an unintentional lab leak. On rare occasions, lab techs were bitten by their charges, and I don't think they took any quarantine measures when it happened. Something like that seems fairly likely, especially the shoddy quality and safety controls they "got away with" in China. Both nations' leadership/institutions are at fault. And America's have become authoritarian like the CCP runs things. They got corrupt and incompetent and grabbed power all at the same time. And they're still going strong! It's insane. I don't see how they can sleep at night and most of all I don't see how the public is LETTING them sleep at night, in their own beds, without a care in the world, counting their money.
