Why do you think they went after Trump for his "perfect phone call?" Anyone threatening Ukrainian oligarchs and the American politicians who profit obscenely from their arrangements is "a threat to democracy." Russians aren't without territorial ambitions. But most of all they're paranoid about insane Europeans and Americans bringing war to their borders, and when you look at NATO and EU behavior, you have to agree it's not paranoia.
