  1. Maybe he meant "ersatz Israel," as in "fake/artificial Israel," which would be fairly apt. I dabbled in economics as a senior in mathematics. I think the field went stale not long after Adam Smith, and it's been flailing around, trying to find a reason to go on, when all the big questions have been answered. So they start making up stuff, just like they started to do in the humanities. We GET the broad sweep of human progress. We KNOW what things lead to better futures and what things lead to worse futures. We've spent the last century (pretty much) trying to un-learn all of those truths, so we can fix everything that ain't broken, and break our civilization in the process.
