The problem with nationalizing the oil in Venezuela is their government saw dollar signs and began a series of spending measures, borrowing against wealth that never materialized, because it's heavy crude, and its government bureaucrats had zero appreciation for the technical and economic obstacles in their way. When they nationalized their oil industry, they drove out most of the expertise required to extract and refine that oil. Then the bottom fell out of oil prices, and Venezuela couldn't make a profit because there's so much more overhead extracting that heavy crude. I don't think socialism has been good for Venezuela. I don't think the USA has been good for Venezuela.

  3. I'm not a big fan of socialism in South America. I think it keeps the regular people from truly prospering and building a better future for their children. That being said, I feel like countries often tend that direction because of the corruption and greed of the mostly peaceful democracies.
