  1. I don't think Turkey's trying to topple Assad, although it would be OK with that outcome. I think Erdogan is trying to make Assad come to the negotiating table. Assad took a hard line on not meeting with Erdogan until Turkish troops leave Syrian soil. It's a red line for him. These attacks are mostly about pressuring Assad. The rebel forces don't have the resources to hold the territory they gained. They can make a fight of it in Aleppo, if they dig in there, but rolling up the gains made in open territory will be pretty systematic for Syria and its Russian and Iranian allies. I don't think the West has the resources to throw at the situation. It's sort of like the Kursk incursion. Shock and awe, but not much behind it. Big gains against soft defenses followed by a fighting retreat... I think it's hilarious that Assad asked for Israeli help. I can even see Israel giving some help, if it means poking Iran in the eye. It would be a much different world if the U.S. had ended its involvement in Syria when President Trump ordered it. In one of the most concerning episodes in American history, a president ordered a troop withdrawal and the Pentagon, CIA, DIA, and State Department defied the order. They lied to him about it. They got away with it.
