  1. I think that negative actions of foreign governments should come at some cost to their trade with us. It's fair to slap a tariff on a product another nation subsidizes. Subsidies are predatory trade practices that hurt domestic producers, unfairly. I think that it makes sense to use your own trade practices to influence other nations in a positive direction. But trying to bring a foreign government to its knees is far too extreme. What our government does is roll out the red carpet when cautious engagement is called for or try to start a war when - again - cautious engagement is called for. There's a middle path that all nations should pursue in their foreign policy and trade policy. Our nation goes from one extreme to the opposite extreme at the flip of a switch, depending on whose economic or political fortunes are at stake, and by "whose" I don't mean the working man.
