  1. It's a cycle. This sort of happened in the 8th Century. The Visigoths in Spain stagnated and welcomed Islam. Then Islam decided to colonize all of Europe and the ReConquista began, eventually driving Muslims out of all of western Europe and Spain. Western civ gets fat, lazy, and deluded, choking on its own prosperity, every so often. Things kind of have to get bad before they can get better. It takes a crisis to revitalize.
