  1.  @brianmeek5236  : I had friends in Sandpoint. They had an A-Frame home out in the woods. "Humbird," huh? One of my best memories of the visit was HUMMINGBIRDS. My friends had feeders all around their back deck and the air was alive with the critters. So Sandpoint. Humbird. Hummingbirds. It fits.

  2. Those robber barons gave us an early taste of fascism, but are remembered as archetypes of corrupt capitalists. But they were anything BUT free-market capitalists. They went STRAIGHT to the power brokers in government to get their way.

  3. Sandpoint's a beautiful place. Lake Pend O'Reille (Ponderay)... Just South, Couer-D'Alene has virtually merged with Spokane, Washington. Way too many people and I wonder what it's done to Sandpoint. I hope it's still as laid back as it was 30 years ago.

  4.  @timan2039  : Strictly speaking, it's not socialism, but early-onset fascism. Government creep into every aspect of our lives, ending with everything under government, nothing outside of government, nothing against government, which was what Mussolini promoted as the fascist goal. I'd say when government is the biggest actor in health care that you're pretty far along the path to fascism. The more we hand over to government to do for us, the less we are able to do for ourselves, and the easier (and more inevitable) it becomes for the government to do TO us. Liberals replicate most of the fascist structures characterizing places like Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy, with slogans penned by Marx and Lenin, and then pretend to themselves and others that this isn't authoritarian, and it doesn't put us on a path to totalitarian rule. If you knew your history and cared about regular folks, you'd be arguing for limited government and personal responsibility.

  5. This is why people should ALWAYS be suspicious about government doing them any favors. As soon as the new "agency" is created, its highest offices will be occupied by pawns of the biggest, most corrupt SOBs they were put there to regulate.

  6. Anybody with any sense of history knows this. But somehow, our education system keeps dragging us back into believing that the government always knows best.
