Raw materials in meteoroid belt, free solar energy so abundant you're more worried about heat shielding than having enough energy for any and all purposes.

  2. Until we gave them hypergolic fuels, they couldn't maneuver in space, because their retro rockets would explode due to fuel build-up before ignition. Hypergolic fuels have 2 parts that ignite on contact with each other, for smooth ignition. But just dumping fuel and igniting a spark made the Soviet retro rockets into gas bombs, if they didn't immediately ignite. Soviet space and nuclear programs stole whatever they needed from the USA. Free people are more creative. Non-free people are better thieves.
