It's been a 2-way thing. The USA has preserved many of the colonial interests of Euro states since before World War I (See "Commodore Perry in Tokyo Harbor"). The USA never needed to fight in Africa, the Middle East, or anywhere else, but European "partners" had massive trade concessions, largely grandfathered into the post-colonial period. Vietnam War? Protecting French interests in Indo-China. Israel? UK's idea. A proxy for keeping trade routes and sweet deals with 3rd-world countries. Only a few weeks ago, France got kicked out of Congo (or was it Burkina-Faso?). It's been basically stealing gold and uranium from Africa for generations, with zero improvement in the conditions for the people in those African countries. The list is very long. The USA always acts like it's in its interest, but really, it's fighting to protect European imperial interests. Europe's a moribund empire that's been content to let the USA carry its water. In return, the USA got soft power. American people don't want any of that stuff. We want to defend ourselves and trade with other countries. Our leaders are still caught in an arrogant mind set they've had since the 1940s.
