  1. The farther you go back in time, the more "privileged" the great thinkers are. The farther you go back in time, the less likely it is that the average person had any education, let alone the leisure to contemplate questions not immediately related to that day's food, clothing and shelter. It takes something above and beyond mere survival for us to make progress.
