@richardpowell3259 : The word is father to the deed, and Elon Musk has made big money by dreaming big and talking big. I'd have more faith in him if he weren't so eager to find ways of prying money out of taxpayers' pockets for what he wants to do. Boy, was he PISSED when he saw all the government grants drying up, due to Trump. Rejecting the Paris Accords cost him billions in government subsidies.

@markbeiser : You could spend years slurping up the flat-Earth theories and purported proofs. You could be pretty smart, too, but still have your brain filled with the alternate reality to the exclusion of more widely-accepted science. Doesn't have to mean a person is stupid. Just still a bit ignorant. For the average lay person, there isn't necessarily a straightforward way to sort out the truth from the fiction. Imagine filling your days with 24/7 Colin Flaherty. You come away thinking every black person you encounter is about to pull a knife or just start beating you up. And he has enough content to keep you busy for weeks or months, even years. It's very easy to get a twisted take on reality in a world so full of people, eager to have you listen to them, not to mention how many thousands of pathological situations you can come up with in a country of 320 million, on a planet of billions. Against those numbers, mere thousands amount to not very much. They're the one-in-a-million situations that when multiplied by all the millions and billions of us can keep you going night and day, non-stop, for years.

@bungeebones : There was a technology bump from it. Lots of spinoffs in industry. Like TANG! But they also pushed the computer revolution along. We learned a lot about materials. Hard to count the actual profit. Kind of like government building roads. Lost money on every road they ever built, but the trade that ensued made everybody richer and sped up the exchange of ideas over large distances. That being said, I'd just as soon things be roadless, unless somebody could profit from building them. I imagine there'd be more trees, now, if we thought that way. But maybe not. Maybe there are more trees, because we go out of our way to plant them wherever we go, especially in arid and semi-arid climates, because we move water over large distances, too.
