Israel's a sacred cow for my and his generation. I'm quite a bit younger than he is, but pretty raised in the same Christian milieu of the postwar period, and we took it for granted that Israel has a right to exist and that we were right to do what we did in 1947-8. There's a huge amount of sunk cost involved, decades of business-as-usual, since, an important proxy when Arab states get too uppity or too advanced. Then there's the human cost of the end of Israel. The death toll. The likely nuclear holocaust. There were a lot of people living in Palestine who lost their homes. I don't know how we un-make the mistakes of the past, but I think people who don't stand for the right of Israel to exist at THIS juncture are asking for the apocalypse. Or skirting close to apocalypse. If they feel their existence is threatened, will they go nuclear? At the same time, I feel that people who support Israel's right to exist are ignoring the fresh memories of the injustice inflicted to serve justice after the Holocaust. Two wrongs don't make a right, and there are a lot of people - many of whom are no longer with us - who got treated like dirt and never got any compensation.
