  1. You left out one important detail: The class system was so ingrained that the rank and file often didn't respect an up-jumped officer from their own ranks. They WANTED officers who looked, talked, and acted upper class and had classical educations. During that time, there was also no conscription, so the ranks consisted largely of men dodging the hangman's noose or years of imprisonment, unlike, say, the French, who had a "citizen army" consisting of men from all walks of life, and not just a bunch of criminals choosing military service over prison.
