  1. Yes. Reject God and some new faith-based orthodoxy will take its place, because most people (all people?) need to believe in something bigger. Reject the old gods and in a millisecond, you'll find new ones to replace them. And they make all the same mistakes of the old hierarchies, but without consulting the past for hard-won wisdom. IOW, throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

  3. Individualism + Responsibility to the whole = good. Individualism with NO responsibility compels the collective to provide the needs of the individual. In order to run the collective, you must CRUSH the individual.

  4. In the British Army and Navy, it was possible to earn officer rank and advancement by merit. The aristocracy HATED this, but SO DID THE RANK-AND-FILE. They didn't want to be led by the dregs of society, as they considered themSELVES, so an officer who didn't know his Latin and use flowery speech and exhibit noblesse oblige wasn't respected.
