  1. Grew up helping Dad work on his cars in the '70s. Far from an expert, but generally handy by my teen years. Still far from expert, but even I can see how the people preaching to us about saving the planet are insisting we buy disposable durable goods.

  2. I couldn't agree more! We need simple, easy-to-repair vehicles. What the government and the automakers have done is conspire against us.

  3.  @TheBabyDerp  Oh I dunno. Sometimes making do with what's on hand is harder than just buying what you need. Fabricating motor mounts and "rearranging" things is not necessarily very realistic. But buying a short block that's made for the chassis is a whole lot easier and not ridiculously expensive.

  6.  @tomdee2054  Theoretically, you can buy anything you want if price is no object. In practice, however, I've had good mechanics who have simply refused to do a job because it was too expensive. Experience has taught them that customers can say "whatever it costs" and then balk when the bill comes due, or threaten to sue the mechanic or review-bomb him online, etc. I think it's a great time to be a good mechanic or tradesman of almost any sort. But I live in a relatively small place, and bad actors don't last very long. I can see where it could be tough in the big city, with money and businesses fleeing, and market for their services drying up. But out here in flyover country, it seems like the trades are prospering, and all the good ones are booked well in advance.

  10. I agree it's a dead end. We don't need all the crap they build into cars, nowadays. They tell us they're saving the planet. Real, durable, repairable vehicles mean you don't have to build as many new ones, which is where the real expenditures of energy and money come in. And the pollution. Takes years to make up for the pollution of building a new vehicle. We deserve and need simple machines that the average person can fix, like "the old days."
