I think all the "love" stuff is actually aimed at men. If women are sugar and spice and everything nice, apparently that's what men want! And if men are all snakes and snails and puppy dog tails, then that's apparently what women want! All that romance stuff that women want? Yeah, that's just a fiction to convince young men to make a commitment. Raising a family is dirty, stinky stuff that women take in stride, but men need an inducement. At root, I think the romance is to get us to embrace - or at least tolerate - the ugliness that is real life.
