Straws are a much bigger deal than violent criminals, obviously.

Moreover, I think the other 49 states need to learn by California's lesson. They're always the quickest to adopt new ways, and they stretch from tropics to mid-latitude alpine. Good experiments that work for such a diverse state can be good models to copy. BAD experiments that don't work can save the other 49 states the trouble of going any further down a blind alley.

Yes. You could probably perform a number of piecework jobs, provide someone some value, and earn some cash of your own. If you could structure your work that way - asynchronously - you could be in a better situation. Have you looked into operating as a private contractor, marketing your skills that way? You just get paid for providing the service, and YOU worry about the IRS and insurance. Thing is, the best way to operate is with cash. When you cut the gov't out, except for income tax, medicine's surprisingly affordable.

Yes. Still, polite society probably should evolve away from gratuitous plastic. Especially in a place that brings it to you in an actual glass glass. Why would I want to put plastic between me and my drink? Just a dumb behavior people follow in restaurants and clubs. But that's legislative over-reach, beyond a doubt. They're trying to build a fascist utopia, and they're toppling from the weight of intentions > wherewithal.

I'd as soon not be given a straw before I asked for one. I always lay my straw to the side, immediately, in a restaurant and it just adds to the mess. You ain't doin' me any favors with that straw. It SHOULD long since have become a matter of natural etiquette in a society mindful of its footprint.
