  1. To be a purist, tariffs and excise taxes are the ONLY taxes permitted in the U.S. Constitution. Yes, this comes at a cost. But Mexico is sticking us with the bill for a RECORD number of illegal immigrants, by not being a good neighbor. You can't make them stop, but you can exact a price for their continuing.

  2. It seems likely that Trump will come out of this 5% tariff threat as a statesman, who FINALLY got movement in the direction of U.S. national (and local) interests. This was something he didn't have the political clout or national consensus to try. Looks like he's using the tools at his disposal to push things where they ought to go. And that We Build the Wall outfit, with even just 1/2-mile of barrier, shows that another 1/2-mile could be built.
