@GODCONVOYPRIME : I don't think you ever want to occupy Afghanistan. You just need to punish Afghanistan when they get the 7-year itch, and go jihading in parts East and West of their mountain strongholds. My understanding is since before Muhammad, they've been raiding down into India every so often, and pressured the border states. You just have to defend against them and crush them when they come. I think it comes of so many people living on so much barren ground. It's why the Mongols swept across most of the known world. It's why the Vikings went viking. You just have to accept that they're going to generate a surplus of young men looking to make their fortune in a moribund economy or an economy interrupted by war, as Afghanistan's been, since the Soviets invaded in the '70s. And of course the history is much longer than that. Go back a ways and the British and Russians are fighting over it. The Mongols pretty much went where they pleased, but Afghans could cause 'em fits, I imagine.
